Family Sign Language in Schools is a course for deaf and hearing children to learn age-appropriate British Sign Language (BSL) through play and planned activities. The majority of our tutors are native BSL users giving pupils quality interaction with a deaf role model and access to full BSL. The course focuses on the unique features of BSL, including grammar, facial expression, placement and turn-taking. Delivery is adapted to suit the needs of individual pupils and learning outcomes are linked to the Curriculum for Excellence for modern languages, literacy and health and wellbeing. Pupil Equity Funding (PEF) can be used to fund this course. To introduce Family Sign Language to your school email FSLschools@ndcs.org.uk Everyone Together is a national project in Scotland, supporting families of deaf children aged 0-8 years. We aim to build circles of support around deaf children, beginning with the family and broadening out to include professionals and the wider community. Our Deaf Awareness sessions are available for nursery schools and primary 1-4 classes in Scotland. Whilst nurseries and schools with a deaf child will be prioritised, we can offer sessions to those without any deaf children at present. All Deaf Awareness sessions are delivered free of charge, as we are funded to deliver this work by Big Lottery Fund. Email everyone.together@ndcs.org.uk for further information.
