Five Sisters Zoo near Livingston, West Lothian presents around 190 species of animals for young learners and older visitors to see up close in a highly-accessible, fun and engaging environment. In October 2015 we rescued and re-homed four male ex-circus lions. This followed the successful re-homing and on going rehabilitation of three ex-circus European brown bears in 2012. Most recently in May 2018, two young rescue brown bears arrived and are settling into their new home. Our winter programme with talks, keeper Q &A and animal handling sessions recently won a nationally-recognised award for educational excellence, increasing accessibility to biodiversity learning in Scotland. Outdoor learning is growing, and the benefits are aplenty. We are delighted to deliver sessions out of the classroom on our wonderful nature trail, where we explore terrestrial and aquatic environments, discovering invertebrates with classes. Our sessions are linked with the Curriculum for Excellence, and our staff have received accredited citizen science training. Sessions are also highly flexible to complement classroom learning, be that classification and characteristics, habitats and adaptations (including rainforest), food chains, or another specific topic within the theme of biodiversity and interdependence. Class booklets and teacher’s notes are available.
